My
Computer Horror Story!
In the Year 1997
Many
Years now I have been wanting a Computer and to
learn how to operate one.
But
there where always more important things to do,
like working outside the home and taking care
of my family.
Finally
in July of 1997 it became reality, no children at
home anymore, no outside job and me
and my husband Daniel alone at home!
Caught
in the buying fever, I raced to the Store, to buy
my long hoped for Computer. I put it on my Credit
Card, because I was going to pay it off in several
month, paying it off faster would save me some of
the percentage.
That
was my thought!
Coming
home with a whole bunch of Packages, I started to
connect all the cables and whatever else needed
doing to make my PC functionable. The whole proccess
took me two days until everything was as it should
be. I was not able to do any Housework and my cooking
sank below the Novice Level.
Furniture
had to be put together, so I would have room to
place all my New Toys! My husband was already complaining
about that horrible food he was getting the past
few day's. Now I was ready to plug the whole thing
into the outlet box. But first I had to say a prayer:
"Dear
Lord, please don't let me blow up with the Computer!"
I was not so sure , as what I did was correct.
Everything
went well and was in working Order and I thanked
our Lord, that I was still enjoying Life! Now
things really got complicated and I had to invite
my husbands co-worker Berlon to help me with the
programming, because that was just too much for
a Newbie at Computers.
I
was having so much fun learning about how to operate
the Computer and learning about all those wonderful
Programs the Computer was installed with.I
kept deleting things and reprogramming them. Knocking
the Printer out of the System and reinstalling it! My
housework was lagging terrible and I didn't want
to cook anymore either. When I did cook it sure
didn't taste the same. Dusting has never been my
favorite, but now it was really getting dramatic!
After two month of learning and experimenting I
felt very smart and ready for the Internet. Having
come so far these past two month I really felt smart
and learned. I now was writing Letters to my husbands
customers, using the Printer and the Scanner, and
had much knowledge about my Renate Computer. So
I decieded to connect with AT&T to the Internet. I
had such fun surfing the net, chatting with my son
Heath in Puerto Rico and all kinds of different
People.
One
day my son asked me: " mom where are your calling
connection from?" Well where do you think from;
of course Clarksville, I said!" My son replied:"I
see over here, that you are connected thru Nashville,
and that could be very expensive!
"Don't
worry-came from my side-after all I only have to
pay a flat rate of $ 19.95 a month, everything is
fine. Three month later, just a few days before Christmas
we recieved a call from Bell South, inquiring about
an unusal Phone-bill that I was having in the sum
of $1900.-
scccrrrreeeeaaaacccchh
!!!
Since
I was not connected locally to the Internet, I was
charged by long Distance connection all the hours
that I was in the Net! Again, I had misunderstood
a Procedure, like so many others since having a Computer. Immediately
I canceled my connection with AT&T and hooked up to
AOL, because AOL has a Clarksville Local connection. AT&T
still has not given me an explanation why they waited
for three month to send me a Bill and not every month
like they are supposed too. Had
they sent me a Bill after one month, I would have
known something was wrong and canceled my connection!
Then the
same week on a Sunday morning when I got up and started
my Computer, there was a awful emptiness--it had crashed! Instead
of going to church as I normally do, I was working
all day until the middle of the night to put all the
programs back in. But not beeing to sure about my
abilities in such matters I consulted a Packard Bell
technician who knew he's job very well and fixed all
my problems.
No
telling what I all had erased in the beginning. Everything works very well now and I have learned
a lot and am on the way to becoming a Computerwhiz.
(...Yeah right..!!!!)
I have a Dependancy and I am hooked on Computer. Every
day I need a certain amount, so I don't suffer withdrawal
symptoms. I don't know if they have Medication already
for such malady!!! Now
instead of paying the Computer of early, I have to
concentrate on paying my newly aquired Phonebill!
But thanks to the Lord, I am wise and learned and
alive!!!
Finally
in March AT&T came through and reeimbursed me $
1100.-, since they didn't send me a Bill after one
Month like they were supposed too.
« And I am still trying to get "wise and learned"! »
